OUR MISSION

Orphic Spring is a collaborative broadcasting platform based at Cranbrook Academy of Art. This station is a vehicle for sharing creative content, such as discussions, posing questions, sharing music and field recordings, broadcasting happenings in the community, and hosting radio conferences and artist talks. Students can connect with listeners, alumni, and artists, and organize interviews with AIRS, peers, and visiting artists. This station and the community that shapes it will morph with time. We are open to all those who would like to share the microphone, listen in, or contribute in any way. As we are an organization formed from and within the Cranbrook Academy of Art we are bound to the student code of conduct and the values that the institution upholds.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Independence

Respect

An active pursuit of the diversity of voices of the student body

INDEPENDENCE

Our primary allegiance is to the Cranbrook Academy of Art Students with respect and partnership alongside the larger Cranbrook community. Our goal is to represent the voice of the students. Decisions about what we cover and how we do our work are made by the Orphic Spring broadcasters.

RESPECT

Everyone affected by our broadcasting deserves to be treated with decency and compassion. We listen to others. We are sensitive to differences in attitudes and culture. We minimize undue harm and take special care with those who are vulnerable or suffering. With all subjects of our coverage we are mindful of privacy . Broadcasters should be diligent in safeguarding their personal privacy as well. Orphic Spring is a public space and self protection is part of being accountable online.

AN ACTIVE PURSUIT OF THE DIVERSITY OF VOICES OF THE STUDENT BODY

Our content includes and represents the stories, voices of, about and by the Cranbrook student body. Orphic Spring is a gathering place for students of any race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, social class, faith, age, disabilities and abilities, political persuasion and geographic location. It embraces veteran status and family structures, marital status and national origin, immigration status and educational attainment. We are committed to sharing the diverse voices of the student body as a core value.

GOVERNING BODY

Orphic Spring is an independent broadcasting platform led and run by the student body. One broadcast host of each program will make up the governing board of Orphic Spring. Board members will have one (1) vote in matters relating to the radio station, including addressing changes or violations to our mission statement and guiding principles. The current Broadcasting Director will run three meetings each semester with broadcasting hosts and will act as a tiebreaker if necessary. The Broadcasting Director has the right to make unilateral decisions in regards to the regular operations and maintenance of the radio station.

IN CASE OF MISSION STATEMENT VIOLATIONS

Violation of the Orphic Spring Mission Statement and Guiding Principles can lead to a broadcaster being removed from the radio station. The decision is ultimately in the hands of the Cranbrook Administration, and can be formally suggested by the Orphic Spring Board (editorial team) after a vote of their peers.

HOW WE DEAL WITH ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS OUR BROADCASTERS

We do not have to put up with being personally attacked because of our gender, race, religion or any other identifying factor.
If you receive a message that is unpleasant but not threatening and is about your program, try responding with something along these lines – "I appreciate constructive feedback. Can you tell me more about what concerned you?" If the person responds constructively, you've got a conversation going. If the person continues to be unpleasant or becomes abusive, do not continue the conversation. Instead, move to the next suggestion.

If a message feels threatening, do not respond to it. Instead, forward it to the Dean of Student Services, Vanessa Lucero-Mazei, VMazei@Cranbrook.edu.
